First Black Fungus Detected In Jammu

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has detected the first case of black fungus and the person is in a cortical state. The person is of 40 years of age and is admitted to GMC Jammu.

The last case of black fungus was detected and successfully treated by GMC Jammu in November 2020.

“The black fungus was caused by steroids induced with uncontrolled diabetes,” Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma, the principal, GMC Jammu, was quoted saying by Jammu newspaper, Daily Excelsior. When the person was admitted he was Covid19 negative with a sugar level of 900. “This is an avoidable complication that can be restricted by strictly monitoring the blood sugar levels of the COVID patients put on steroids.”

Unlike Covid19, Mucormycosis (black fungus) is not communicable. It is caused by a fungus that is abundant in the atmosphere and usually finds a home in immune-compromised patients, after their recovery from Covid19. It germinates in the eyes and the nasal mucosa and starts penetrating the eyeballs, brain, sinuses and facial bones in serious cases.

The patient is reportedly from Poonch.
